You see QR codes everywhere: menus, invitations, flyers, presentation slides. That square you point a camera at to open a link is the simplest bridge between paper and screen. Understanding how it works helps you make them better and more safely.
A QR code stores data as black and white dots
A QR code represents information as a grid of light and dark squares (modules). A camera reads the pattern and reconstructs it into a URL or text. The three large squares in the corners are anchors that fix orientation, so the code scans even when it's tilted.
A key feature is error correction. The code carries redundant information so it can still be read when part of it is covered or damaged. Higher error correction means you can add a logo or decorate the shape and it still scans, at the cost of slightly less data capacity.
Static vs. dynamic codes
QR codes come in two kinds.
- Static codes: the address is embedded directly in the code. There's no service in between, so the code keeps working even if some service disappears. But once printed, the link can't be changed.
- Dynamic codes: the code holds a redirect address, and the real destination can be changed on a server. You get editable links and click stats, but you depend on that redirect service.
For things that must last and don't need tracking: a private event invite, printed material: a static code is the safe choice.
Balancing design and scannability
You can recolor and decorate a QR code, but overdo it and it stops scanning. Two things keep it readable.
- Enough contrast: there must be clear contrast between the code's dark modules and the background. Make the background too close to the code color and a camera can't find it.
- Quiet zone: leave empty space around the code. Cropping the margin or crowding other elements against it lowers the scan rate.
For a styled, decorative QR code, keep the core intact, decorate only around it, and set error correction high to stay safe.
Always scan it before printing
The most common mistake is printing without checking. It can look great on screen yet fail to scan on a real phone, especially when you've recolored or reshaped it. Scan a decorated code on several devices before printing. A code printed too small is also hard to read, so test at the actual size you'll use.
