Resizing and cropping can both change the dimensions of the resulting image, but they solve different problems. Resizing keeps the complete image and changes its pixel count. Cropping removes part of the image to create a particular composition or aspect ratio. Start by deciding whether the whole scene must remain or only a selected area is needed.
Use Resize when the complete image must remain visible. Resizing a 2400 × 1600 px photo to 1200 × 800 px preserves the composition and its 3:2 aspect ratio while reducing the pixel dimensions.
Use Crop when part of the image can be removed to fit a required frame. To create a square profile image from a landscape photo, select a 1:1 area and position the subject within it. From the same source, Resize turns 2400 × 1600 into 1200 × 800 with the full scene intact, while Crop keeps only a 1080 × 1080 region.
Forcing an image into width and height values with a different ratio stretches or squeezes it. When you need a different aspect ratio, crop the composition instead of simply unlocking the ratio.
Aspect ratio describes the relationship between width and height. 1200 × 800 and 600 × 400 have different pixel counts but share a 3:2 ratio. Preserving that ratio keeps people and objects in their original proportions.
Changing a 1200 × 800 image directly to 1200 × 630 with the ratio unlocked distorts the image. If you need 1200 × 630, crop a region with the required 1.90:1 ratio and then set the output dimensions.
