Time isn't base 10; it's base 60. Adding 40 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes should give 2 hours 25 minutes, not 1 hour 85 minutes, but that carry is easy to miss once you're adding several blocks by hand. Once you're past three or four rows, splitting morning and afternoon shifts or subtracting a break from total time on-site, mental math errors creep in fast.
This calculator only needs a + or − sign per block; it handles the base-60 carrying automatically and lands on an exact total.
The same total appears as H:M:S, decimal hours, total minutes, and total seconds because each suits a different use. A timesheet wants H:M:S; an hourly rate calculation or invoice wants decimal hours, where 1 hour 30 minutes becomes 1.5h. Entering a meeting length into a booking system in minutes is easiest with the total-minutes figure.
Instead of converting units by hand each time, pick whichever format you need and copy it straight from the result.
With only + rows, this is a plain adder, but mixing in − rows turns it into a way to check actual time against a target. Add your target (say, 8 hours) as a + row and subtract the time you actually worked, and what's left (or how much you went over) comes out directly.
When the subtracted rows outweigh the added ones, the total goes negative, so the sign alone tells you whether you left early or worked overtime.
The carry when minutes pass 60 (15 + 50 = 65 minutes, i.e. 1h 5m) is handled automatically: exactly the kind of thing that's easy to miss adding by hand.
Subtracting the break from total time on-site gives the actual worked time that pay is usually based on.
A negative result means more was worked than the target. The sign alone tells you overtime from a shortfall, handy for a weekly hours reconciliation.
